Amadeo Roldan y Gardes, a composer and violinist, was a great proponent of the Afrocubanismo art movement in the 1920s. He became the concertmaster of the Orquesta Filarmónica of Havana and founded the Havana String Quartet. He wrote the first symphony to include Afro-Cuban percussion instruments. His best-known piece is La Rebambaramba, a ballet composed in 1928, which embodies the joys and colors of Afro-Cuban fiesta in Caribbean melorhythms.
