Classics for Kids
About Us

Classics for Kids® program helps kids learn about classical music in a fun, entertaining way.

On the radio, host Naomi Lewin introduces classical music's great composers in segments filled with stories about their lives and the music that made them famous.

At home and in school, children can explore the world of classical music online. Kids can have fun with Classics for Kids® interactive games and learn about music too—they can compose their own music and share it with their friends; echo rhythm patterns; listen to their favorite classical music; and see and hear the instruments of the orchestra.

In the classroom, classical music can be an exciting tool. The Classics for Kids® lesson plans and teaching resources give teachers practical, effective plans and activities that use classical music to help children learn. and meet national and state standards. They are based on National Standards for the Arts and state Academic Content Standards for Music, as well as on Theory of Multiple Intelligences. The materials also incorporate various philosophies, including those of Orff, Dalcrose, and Kodaly.

The Classics for Kids® lesson plans were written by Dr. Kay Edwards, Professor of Music Education at Miami University in Oxford, OH. Dr. Edwards earned her bachelor of music degree from Ohio University and both a master of music and a doctor of musical arts in general music from Arizona State University. She has taught at Oberlin Conservatory, UNC-Greensboro and in public schools over the past 20 years and is a specialist in early childhood/elementary general music with special training in Orff, Kodály and Dalcroze.

Additional resources for teachers and parents, as well as the Classics for Kids activity pages, were provided by Music Educator and Classics for Kids® Consultant Jennifer Morris and Cincinnati Public Radio Educational Outreach Manager Chris Phelps.

Classics for Kids® is a production of WGUC 90.9 FM, Cincinnati's Classical Public Radio. The program has won numerous awards, including Ohio Education Telecommunications Program of the Year, and The Communicators Award of Distinction.
